Earlier this month, production got under way on Fox's Untitled X-Files Revival, which brings back Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) and David Duchovny (Fox Mulder). Given the secretive nature of the show, there isn't too much we know yet, except that the revival will premiere this January, with the two stars joined by Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), William B. Davis (The Cigarette Smoking Man) and new guest star Joel McHale, who will play an ally to Mulder. Today, Entertainment Weekly has revealed the cover of this week's issue, which features both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reuniting a Mulder and Scully, who shared new details about the show.

The series premiere will focus on Scully and Mulder investigating a "possible alien abductee," played by The Americans star Annet Mahendru, based on a tip provided by a conservative talk show host, played by Joel McHale. In the 2008 movie The X-Files: I Want to Believe, both Mulder and Scully were out of the agency. David Duchovny reveals that Mulder has seen better days

"Mulder's not in a great place. He's wearing bad jeans, so you can just extrapolate from my wardrobe. He's in a dark, dark place."

Gillian Anderson adds that she enjoys how we first meet Mulder and Scully in their relationship.

"I like where we find Mulder and Scully in their relationship. I also like the area of zeitgeist that we step in to. It's on point and raises some very interesting issues. And question marks."

Series creator Chris Carter adds that the show reflects our current society, in the aftermath of 9/11, which happened right before the original show went off the air.

"The X-Files ended right after 9/11. A lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection. We're being spied on now, we're being lied to - all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we're in similar and much more dire times right now."

This latest report also debunks a rumor from earlier this month, that the second episode, "Home Again", is a sequel to the fan-favorite episode "Home" from The X-Files Season 4. Instead, it is described as "a lunatic love story about deformed, inbred children and the limbless mother they keep under their bed." While several of the original cast members are coming back, Chris Carter revealed that none of the monsters from the The X-Files are returning.

"We're not going to reboot any of the old favorites, although it was something we all thought about. These are all brand new stories. We hope to scare you in brand new ways."
