Fans are very precious when it comes to the character of Constantine. The 2005 movie took great liberties with the source material, turning the British and blonde haired demon hunter into a dark haired American with a California surfer accent. Now, with the new NBC series, John Constantine is going back to his roots. This will be a fairly accurate portrayal, except for one huge character trait. John is known as a heavy chain smoker. That could change. Series creator David S. Goyer addressed this concern, saying that it is still under negotiation with the network.

"That's a tricky one on network TV. We're negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting."

There are only four main series regulars in Constantine, all now cast, including (Matt Ryan as the lead, Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford and Lucy Griffiths). Goyer revealed in an interview last week that production is starting very soon. This adaptation certainly gets back to the original comic book's roots by casting a British actor as John Constantine, a con man who becomes a supernatural detective, protecting New York citizens from demonic forces.

"We start shooting next week. Shooting the pilot. We only have four series regulars but we've cast them all now. I'm proud to say that Constantine is actually being played by a British guy. Matt Ryan and he is going to have blonde hair."

Goyer next spoke about bringing in other characters from the DC Universe.

"[We will be bringing in] quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC universe should we move forward...[They] will be showing up. I think we would try to bring in some of the other occult figures."

David S. Goyer also revealed more details about the other series regular characters, played by Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford and Lucy Griffiths.

"Harold Perrineau. He's amazing. He plays an angel but not the kind of angel from Touched by an Angel. He's fantastic. Charles Halford who plays Reggie Ledoux on True Detective. He plays Chas. I don't know if you know that character from the comic books. He's sort of Constantine's strong man/friend. Lucy Griffiths who is ... I don't want to say too much about her. She' s an amalgam of characters. Hopefully, touch wood, They'll be another recurring character announced. Pretty cool actor who fans will know the character he plays from the comic books as well."

When asked if this would be a visual effects-heavy show, David S. Goyer had this to say, while praising pilot director Neil Marshall.

"Yes, very. And Neil Marshall who directed The Descent, Black Sails, and Game of Thrones is doing the pilot. He's pretty good with scares."

Stay tuned for more announcements regarding Constantine as production gets under way this week.
