Kevin Feige, president of Disney's Marvel Studios unit, dropped massive news all through the 4 hour Disney investor day presentation. Tucked in among the big titles and franchise series spin-offs was a gem of a first look at the studio's first animated series Marvel's What If...?, set to debut summer 2021 on Disney+.

What If...? takes another look at famous events from the Marvel event movies and reimagines them in new, different and unexpected ways. Each episode will focus on a specific key event from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will flip the script on that moment. An example from Marvel is, "What if Peggy Carter was the one who became a super soldier?"

With this news, certainly no one can accuse Disney of lacking for creative ways to mine their vast universe of content for new stories. Taking the massive Marvel library and potentially recasting every major moment from every major superhero movie certainly seems to map endless optional story lines. Perhaps Disney will release a Marvel game that offers a card-draw based option to select 'what-if' options from their movies and asks players to recast the logline or synopsis based on the cards. It's not much of a stretch, from there, to envision a Disney park attraction based on this twisting premise, where park goers would enter and interact with such worlds that have been turned upside-down.

What If...? will cover many of the different heroes from the Marvel Universe, with a voice cast including Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher. Bryan Andrews directs with Ashley Bradley serving as the head writer. Atwell set the pace as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger and then returned to the role in the series Agent Carter and MCU movies, Captain America" The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, she has played in the romantic fantasy, Cinderella and in 2018's Christopher Robin.

Wright has enjoyed a varied career, including major motion pictures like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, No Time to Die, Shaft and television series including Westworld, House, Boardwalk Empire and Angels in America. He is also confirmed as James Gordon in the upcoming The Batman from Warner's DC label. Director, Andrews is most well known as a storyboard artist on a wide variety of films, including Marvel hits The Avengers, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange and other major movies like Skyscraper, John Carter and Hotel Transylvania. What If...? will be Andrews' first turn in the director's chair.

This announcement marks yet one more reason why Disney+ may be the single best deal among all streaming services, even with news of the impending price increase on the heels of nearly 90 million new subscribers in just over a year.
