If you're a fan of Supernatural, you've got something to look forward to in January. For the second time in the show's history, The CW will air a backdoor pilot for a Supernatural spin-off titled Wayward Sisters. We've known that the potential series is going to be included in Supernatural season 13 for quite some time now, but the first photos from the episode have arrived online, giving us our first look at Wayward Sisters.
The backdoor pilot, which is a pilot for a new series that airs as part of the flagship series, follows Claire's (Kathryn Love Newton) return home to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Jody (Kim Rhodes) and Alex (Katherine Ramdeen) are waiting for her. Wayward Sisters is going to focus on characters fans already know and love, but new talent is coming on board as well. Donna (Brianna Buckmaster), Patience (Clark Backo), and new girl Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip) make up this new force to fight supernatural monsters. If Supernatural has done this well with a duo, imagine six kick-ass ladies. Will it be overkill? We'll have to wait and see, but there's a lot of potential here.
As far as the photos go, all of the girls are featured and they are a mix of fun and intensity. Several of the photos feature the girls bonding with one another. Others have them preparing to face down some unknown evil thing that threatens them. Since this is a backdoor pilot, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are also featured in a couple photos and will star in the Wayward Sisters pilot. Whether or not it goes any further than the single episode will depend on the audience reaction. Hopefully The CW and the creative team behind Supernatural have learned from previous mistakes.
As many fans of the series are likely aware, this isn't the first time the network has tried to backdoor a pilot to a Supernatural spin-off. And the first time did not go very well, to say the least. In Supernatural season 9, a backdoor pilot titled Bloodlines aired. To this day, it remains one of the show's most hated episodes. Considering the show has nearly 300 episodes under its belt over the course of almost 13 full seasons, that's really saying something. Wayward Sisters hopefully won't suffer the same fate.
The Wayward Sisters episode of Supernatural is set to air on The CW on January 18, 2018. There's no word on how quickly the network will move forward with the series if the response is positive, but they probably won't make fans wait too long. It's likely Wayward Sisters would be included in The CW's Fall 2018 lineup, should it get picked up to series.
