The Walking Dead is the only thing that can even come close to rivaling the amount of internet chatter and feverish fandom as Game of Thrones can. But now that Thrones has wrapped up for the season, more eyes will be focused on The Walking Dead's season 7 premiere this October. We still don't know a ton about what to expect, outside of the usual amount of zombie-goodness, but we do know that there are going to be two new female characters in the cast.
A new report from TVLine states that Rick, Carl and the gang (with the exception of whoever gets the bat to the head) will be joined by two new ladies, likely because the show will need some new perspective and some fresh bodies to replace the ones that keep dying. The report came as part of a Q&A article and claims that the characters will show up in episode 6 of the next season. Here is what they had to say.
"Episode 6 will introduce two new characters who don't sound to me like anyone in particular from the comic book series. (Correct me if I'm wrong - and we both know you will.) Naomi is a grandmotherly type who, having lost so many loved ones, is now willing to do whatever it takes not to have to bury any more. (Maybe she's being introduced to counsel Carol about the awful necessities of the post-apocalyptic world... ) On the flip side is Jennie, a sunny-side-up kinda teenager."
We have no idea what is going to happen when season 7 of The Walking Dead kicks off, but we do know that it will hit the ground running, to some degree. So it is very hard to speculate as to how exactly Naomi and Jennie will be brought onto the show. Assuming this report is true, we do know that they will be introduced near the mid-season finale, so they could be a big part of the second half of the season. They do both bring an interesting perspective to the show right now though, and they both bring something pretty different to the table.
The characters do sound like they were written specifically for the show and don't sound exactly like any characters from The Walking Dead comics, but it is possible they were based at least loosely on someone from the books. Jennie, being a "sunny-side-up" teenager could offer an interesting counterpoint to Carl's hard boiled, gritty attitude on things. She could also serve as a love interest of sorts, but who knows. Naomi on the other hand sounds to be an older woman, and that is something we don't see a lot of in the world of The Walking Dead. As logic would seem to dictate, many elderly people didn't make it all that long in the world that the show is built, but Naomi sounds like she could be one of the lucky (ish) ones, at least in that respect.
As interesting as the prospect of some new female characters joining the cast of The Walking Dead season 7 is, all eyes are still on Negan and that epicly frustrating cliffhanger. We know one of the cast members is going to meet a grisly demise at the wrong end of Negan's baseball bat Lucille. It was recently revealed that AMC filmed different versions of the resolution to the cliffhanger in order to avoid a spoiler leak, so we will have to wait for that resolve, at least for now. The Walking Dead season 7 is set to premiere on October 9.
