After months of delays The Walking Dead is back on track. AMC has confirmed that filming is underway once again on the hit zombie series. As has been the case with man productions during 2020, the show was forced to hit the pause button back in March in the interest of health and safety. Now, work has begun on the remaining episodes of season 10.

The news was confirmed by AMC via The Walking Dead social media accounts. An image of the clapboard from set was shared, revealing that the cast and crew are back on set with filming starting up again. David Boyd is directing the new episode. The image was shared with the following caption.

"Lights, camera, Walkers! #TWDis back in production."

Originally, The Walking Dead season 10 was going to conclude its run in April with the episode A Certain Doom. That episode was in the middle of post-production when the shutdown went into effect. It was finished months later and aired recently as a one-off special. Instead, the network now intends to film an additional six episodes, which extend season 10 well into next year. AMC has undertaken rigorous health and safety protocols, like other productions that have gotten back up and running, to help mitigate any issues. Though, as we've seen, risk cannot go down to zero in the current environment.

The decision to extend the current season was brought on by the shutdown. The Walking Dead season 11, as was recently revealed, will conclude the long-running show based on Robert Kirkman's Image Comics series of the same name. Even with the announcement, AMC's vision of the zombie apocalypse will be on the air through at least 2022, if not early 2023. There is still a whole lot of gas left in the tank.

To that point, The Walking Dead universe is, in many ways, just beginning. Fear the Walking Dead season 6 finally premiered and a new spin-off, The Walking Dead: World Beyond recently began airing its first season. The show, which focuses on the first generation of kids to grow up during the zombie apocalypse, is billed as a two-season event series. Additionally, AMC has announced a new spin-off that will center on Daryl and Carol, which is set to arrive sometime in 2023. A new anthology series title Tales from the Walking Dead is also in development. There is also the matter of the trilogy of Walking Dead movies, which will see Andrew Lincoln returning as Rick Grimes.

Despite these ambitious plans for the franchise, ratings for The Walking Dead continue to decline. A Certain Doom was the lowest-rated episode of season 10, at least in terms of live viewership. But new shows represent new jumping-off points for viewers who may have fallen off at some point and never got back on. The Walking Dead season 10 does not yet have a return date set.
