Back in early January, Netflix announced a new Voltron animated series that would start streaming sometime this year. The official logo debuted last month, but now we have our first official photo from the series, thanks to USA Today. This photo comes just one day before the first footage will be unveiled at WonderCon in Anaheim, California tomorrow.

This new series, entitled Voltron: Legendary Defender, will follow the formula of the original show, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which debuted in 1984. The story tracks the adventures of a team of astronauts and a princess from the planet Arus, who all pilot a massive robot. But there will be one major change in the new series: the pilots will all be teenagers. This new series introduces these teenage pilots, Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro, who find themselves in the midst of an intergalactic battle, as they become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets, fending off an alien race lead by the evil King Zarkon. Here's what executive producer Lauren Montgomery had to say about the new show.

"We're trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show."

Executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos added that, unlike the original TV series, each character will be more fully-formed, with back-stories that show each of them have a "real purpose" for joining this team. No specific character details have been given at this time, and we don't know who is voicing these characters quite yet. Lauren Montgomery added that Princess Alura will be more realistic this time around.

"She doesn't have to be the (greatest) fighter right off the bat. She's still a princess from a peaceful kingdom. But she's certainly not fainting at every little thing that overwhelms her."

Joaquim Dos Santos added that the DreamWorks team let them do anything they wanted, and for a period of time, they were considering a military angle that was "really serious" but they ended up discarding that take. Instead, they went with a take that has an "epic Game of Thrones feel that has plenty of danger, with a bit of humor sprinkled in as well." Here's what he had to say about how the stakes are raised in this series.

"You actually feel like, 'Oh man, is Voltron going to get out of this one?' There are some of those encounters they just manage to survive."

It's possible that the streaming service will announce the series premiere date during WonderCon tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. We'll be sure to bring you the footage as soon as it debuts online, so keep an eye out for that sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, take a look at the first official photo from Voltron.
