The Autobots are getting ready to roll out to Netflix. Hasbro and Rooster Teeth have partnered with the streaming service for a brand new Transformers animated series titled Transformers: War for Cybertron. The series will tell an origin story set on Cybertron, the home planet of the Autobots and Decepticons, in a way audiences haven't seen previously.

Netflix is set to debut the series in 2020. Polygon Pictures, the studio behind the previous Transformers animated venture, Robots in Disguise, as well as Star Wars: Resistance, serves as the animation studio, with Rooster Teeth on board to produce the series. At the present time, no voice cast has been announced, but at the very least, we should expect Peter Cullen to return as the voice of Optimus Prime. John Derderian, director of anime for Netflix, had this to say in a statement.

"In this Transformers origin story, we will explore the expansive universe of Cybertron in a way that audiences have never seen before, to the delight of both existing fans and those coming to the franchise for the first time. The Transformers brand is a global phenomenon, and we are thrilled to partner with Hasbro, Rooster Teeth and Polygon to bring this exciting new anime series to our members around the world on Netflix."

FJ DeSanto, who has worked on previous Transformers shows such as Titans Return and Power of the Primes, serves as showrunner. George Krstic, Gavin Hignight and Brandon Easton have been announced as writers for the series. Tom Warner, senior VP for the Transformers franchise at Hasbro, had this to say.

"We're thrilled to work with Rooster Teeth's new premium studio division to bring an all-new Transformers fan-oriented series to Netflix. Transformers has a rich history of great storytelling, and War for Cybertron is an exciting new chapter in the Transformers universe."

Starting as a popular toy line in the 80s, the Transformers have remained a huge staple in pop culture ever since. But for many people of a certain age, it was the original animated series that first made them fans of Optimus Prime and his alien robot allies. So, while the live-action movies have turned the creation into a multi-billion dollar franchise, seeing these characters in animated form still holds a soft spot in the hearts of many fans.

It's proving to be a good time to be a Transformers fan, with Bumblebee reinvigorating the live-action franchise, to go along with this new show. Netflix has been investing heavily in animation as of late, and they're even working on setting up their own in-house animation studio. Some of their most popular shows are in the area of adult animation, such as BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth. They also recently struck a deal for animated movies based on Nickelodeon's The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We'll be sure to keep you posted as more details on War for Cybertron are unveiled by Netflix.
