Amazon has finally released the first trailer for their upcoming series Too Old to Die Young. This was first announced in 2017 and comes from filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, whose previous works include 2011's Drive and 2016's The Neon Demon. While he's not always consistent, in terms of quality, there are themes and content expectations that have been set and all of that looks to be on display here. A quiet lead played by Miles Teller, plenty of violence, gorgeous cinematography and lots of head-scratching, intriguing imagery.

The trailer kicks off in pretty bleak fashion and shows its teeth quite early, with Miles Teller opening things up by saying, "I killed a woman last night." The trailer footage is bathed in neon, synths and violence. It doesn't appear to have an optimistic view of the world, but for those who enjoy wild action sequences that aren't afraid of getting bloody, this may be just what the doctor ordered. It certainly looks to be right at home with Nicolas Winding Refn's previous work, that's for sure.

Nicolas Winding Refn also wrote the series alongside comic book legend Ed Brubaker, in addition to directing every episode. What's particularly amazing is that each episode is said to be roughly 90 minutes, meaning they could all stand on their own as a feature-length movie, in terms of time anyway. Essentially, according to composer Cliff Martinez, who regularly works with Refn, It's a 16-hour movie. Here's what he had to say in a recent interview with ScreenDaily.

"For me the biggest change is just the endurance to do what I think of as a ten-hour movie, or a 16-hour movie in the case of 'Too Old To Die Young.' It's ten episodes that are around 90 minutes a piece. I warned Nic Winding Refn, you better drink a lot of coffee and get a lot of sleep when you can."

While a full synopsis has yet to be revealed, Too Old To Die Young centers on a grieving police officer investigating the criminal underworld of Los Angeles. Along the way, he encounters working-class hit men, Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins from Mexico and even Russian mafia leaders. The cast also includes Billy Baldwin, Jena Malone, John Hawkes, Callie Hernandez, and August Aguilera.

Amazon, like many others in the industry, has been investing heavily in premium content in order to help them better compete with Netflix. Some of their other projects include a series adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower and a very expensive Lord of the Rings TV series, which may cost $1 billion when all's said and done. This also looks to be a pricey and ambitious project. We'll see if that pays off this summer. Amazon is set to release Too Old To Die Young on June 14.
