Trouble may be brewing for at least one of the Marvel animated shows being produced for Hulu. It was announced in February that Marvel TV had partnered with the streaming service for four animated series based on relatively obscure characters from the publisher's vast catalog. Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit Monkey and Tigra & Dazzler are all being developed for Hulu. However, Tigra & Dazzler has just lost its showrunner and writers. Could it be a sign that the show, and possibly all of these shows, are in trouble?
First, here's what we know for sure. According to a new report, showrunner Erica Rivinoja (The Last Man on Earth) has exited the Hulu project. Rivinoja was also set to co-write the series with Chelsea Handler (Chelsea Lately). The report does note that Handler is still on board as a producer alongside Jeph Loeb. But that, in itself, isn't terribly encouraging for reasons we'll get into in a second. It's important to note before hitting the panic button that the series is still scheduled to move forward at this time and that Marvel is seeking a new showrunner.
Looking at the larger picture here, Marvel TV is in for a big shake-up, and one that has already begun in many ways. Jeph Loeb has been heading up the division during the Marvel Cinematic Universe era, which resulted in shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter and the Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The Netflix shows have all already been canceled. More recently, Cloak and Dagger and Runaways were also canceled. Much of this has to do with the fact that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was recently promoted to Chief Creative Officer at Marvel, meaning that he will be overseeing the future on the TV side of things.
Disney+ launched last month and that is going to represent a huge part of Marvel TV's future. Shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye and others are being produced for the service and will be more firmly rooted in the MCU. While animated shows like the ones in the works for Hulu don't necessarily have to connect to the MCU in the same way, Kevin Feige may be shifting directions a bit, which could be getting in the way of what the creative teams for these shows had in mind in the first place. That's somewhat speculative, but the old days of Marvel TV are behind us. That much is certain.
Marvel's Tigra & Dazzler is said to center on two woke superheroes and best friends, who fight for recognition among powered people in Los Angeles. Howard the Duck is being headed up by Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Reboot) and David Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force), with M.O.D.O.K. is being written by comedian Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum (American Dad). Hit Monkey is coming from Josh Gordon and Will Speck (Blades of Glory). The plan is (or maybe was?) to have all of these shows culminate in a crossover titled The Offenders. We'll be sure to keep you posted as further details on the projects are made available. This news comes to us via Deadline.
