David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of HBO's Game of Thrones, have set up their next project. Netflix has set the duo to adapt The Three-Body Problem into a series. Benioff and Weiss will be just part of an impressive team that also includes the likes of Brad Pitt, Rosamund Pike, Alexander Woo, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman, as well as author Liu Cixin.
The Three-Body Problem is an award-winning, best-selling Chinese book series. Netflix's series adaptation will cover all three books, which also includes The Dark Forest and Death's End. Liu Cixin wrote all three books. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had this to say.
"Liu Cixin's trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we've read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe. We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world."
The Three-Body Problem is set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution. It sees a secret military project sending signals to space in order to contact aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction intercepts the signal and intends to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the beings and help them take over a world, or to fight against the impending invasion. Peter Friedlander, vice president of original series at Netfix, had this to say.
"David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo have experience tackling ambitious sagas over time and space. Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have long dazzled fans with thrilling and mind-bending epics. They are all fierce advocates of 'The Three-Body Problem.' As ardent fans, it was especially meaningful to us to get the support of Liu Cixin who created this expansive universe. We all share the same goal: to pay homage to this incredible story and take members on the adventure of a lifetime."
Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner are producing for Plan B Entertainment. Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke are producing on behalf of their company Primitive Streak. Bernadette Caulfield, the president of Benioff and Weiss' production company, is also on board. Nena Rodrigue is also an executive producer with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman. Lin Qi, chairman of Yoozoo Group and The Three-Body Universe, as well as Zhao Jilong, vice president of The Three-Body Universe, also executive produce. Liu Cixin, who is on board as a consulting producer, had this to say.
"I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences. I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix."
This will be the first project as part of the massive overall deal that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss signed with Netflix following the conclusion of Game of Thrones. Benioff and Weiss had been set to produce a Star Wars movie trilogy as well, but disagreements with Lucasfilm got in the way. You can check out the announcement post from Netflix's NX Twitter account.
