The trilogy of The Walking Dead movies starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes are going to air on AMC. Fans of the hit zombie series got a big surprise earlier this year when it was revealed that Lincoln would be departing The Walking Dead after eight seasons and some change. Many assumed that meant Rick Grimes would be killed off, as is typically the case with characters who no longer appear on the series. But things got even more interesting when, instead, Rick departed the life and people he knew in favor of heading off to have his own adventures in a trilogy of movies.

When the movies were initially announced, AMC disclosed very few details about them. There was some possibility that The Walking Dead movies would be theatrically released. However, in the most recent edition of The Walking Dead mailbag, Skybound Entertainment's Johnny O'Dell has revealed that the current plan is to have the movies air on the network. Here's what he had to say about it.

"There are a lot of details that still have to be sorted out for the Rick Grimes movies, but for now the plan is to air the films on AMC."

This doesn't mean that the movies couldn't also be given a limited theatrical engagement of some sort. But there is certainly a difference, on the production side, when making a made-for-TV movie or a full-blown theatrical release. When last we saw Rick Grimes, he had suffered a massive stomach wound and looked to be on his way out. But he survived and, instead, flew away from Alexandria in a helicopter with Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) to a place, or places, currently unknown. Responding to a different fan question, Johnny O'Dell revealed that we're not going to learn of Rick's whereabouts on the series. That's not going to be revealed until the first of these movies actually arrives.

"You'll find out in the movies!"

For the time being, little is known in terms of what to expect from these movies. Andrew Lincoln compared them in tone to the Clint Eastwood western classic Unforgiven. What we do know is that season 9 of the show took a pretty massive leap forward in time following the departure of Rick Grimes, so there is a lot to explore and a lot of time to explore it in. Lincoln also has made it clear that he's never, ever going to reappear as Rick on the show.

Over the last few seasons, AMC has experienced a massive decline in ratings for the series, which is adapted from the Image Comics series of the same name, created by Robert Kirkman. Having Andrew Lincoln leave hasn't seemed to help matters any. Perhaps the hope is that these movies will help give certain fans a renewed interest in the property? Either way, we haven't yet seen the last of Rick Grimes. We'll be sure to keep you posted as more details on the movies are made available. This news was first reported by Skybound.
