The Umbrella Academy season 3 is a go at Netflix. The streaming service has made it official and handed out a renewal for the series, which is based on the Dark Horse Comics title of the same name. The news was shared by the show's official Twitter account, which confirmed that production on the next season will get underway in February. The message reads as follows.

"Oh my god! We're back! Again! It's official. Production for S3 of The Umbrella Academy begins in February"

Additionally, a teaser image that simply features the number "3" with an umbrella on it was shared, signifying the renewal. The core cast members, including Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore, will all be returning for season 3. Production is set to take place in Toronto, Canada. Steve Blackman will be returning as showrunner and executive producer. Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg and Jesse McKeown are also on board as executive producers. Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, who created the comic book, serve as co-executive producers.

Netflix is historically stingy when it comes to releasing viewership info. That said, The Umbrella Academy, based on the available data, ranks as one of the company's most popular original shows. The show's second season debuted over the summer and was met with a warm response from fans and critics. It also quickly rocketed to the top of the streaming service's most-watched list within the app. With the information available, it seems like a no-brainer to keep the show going for at least one more season. But very few Netflix originals make it past three seasons. So, if the show gets to season 4, it would be in rare company.

The series centers on members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes, The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Seance, Number Five, The Horror and The White Violin. They were originally brought back together after being estranged for a number of years to help solve their father's mysterious murder. Season 2 changed things up, picking up with the gang being scattered across several years in Texas during the 60s. They had to contend with multiple apocalyptic events and even Swedish assassins along the way. The Umbrella Academy, as a comic, was highly praised, winning an Eisner Award in 2008 for Best Finite Series/Limited Series.

Netflix has been forced to make some tough decisions as Hollywood has tried to safely get productions back up and running again. It has not been easy. Several popular shows that had planned additional seasons, such as I Am Not Okay With This and Glow, were canceled due to delays and cost concerns. Luckily, it seems The Umbrella Academy was able to avoid that same fate. We'll be sure to keep you posted as further details on season 3 are made available.
