Netflix has revealed a series of first-look photos for The Umbrella Academy season 2. The show, based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's Dark Horse Comics series of the same name, debuted last year and proved to be a big hit. Now, with the sophomore season set to arrive next month, the streaming service is pulling back the curtain and previewing what's to come. As we can see, the action is heading to the 60s this time around.
At the end of season 1, the gang was transported back in time, given the apocalypse they were about to endure as the Earth exploded around them. These photos give a window into the period piece that The Umbrella Academy season 2 is going to become. Without context, it is tough to glean too much from the images, but it's clear that fans are going to be in for something wildly different this time around. What we know for sure is that the main setting will be Dallas, Texas and the creative team appears to be making the most of setting the show 60s years in the past.
The Umbrella Academy follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes. Luther, Diego, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five must work together to solve the mystery surrounding the death of their adoptive father Reginald Hargreeves. The comic book was originally published in 2007 and had long been eyed as a live-action adaptation in Hollywood before Netflix finally made it happen. Steve Blackman serves as showrunner, with Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg on board as executive producers. Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba also serve as producers.
Season 2 picks up following Five's warning to his family that using his powers to escape from Vanya's 2019 apocalypse was risky. The time jump scatters the group in time around Dallas, Texas across a three-year period. Some of them have been stuck in the past for years, while others have built lives and moved on, thinking they're the only ones who survived. Five lands last, winding up right in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which results from the group's disruption of the timeline. Now they must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, stop it and return to the present to stop the other apocalypse from happening. Meanwhile, they are being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins.
The series cast includes Kate Walsh, Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Tom Hopper, Cameron Britton, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Adam Godley, Aidan Gallagher, David Castañeda. John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe and Colm Feore. Marin Ireland, Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Tom Sinclair, Kris Holden-Ried and Jason Bryden are set as newcomers this season. We should expect to see a trailer sooner rather than later, especially after its release was seemingly teased online previously. The Umbrella Academy season 2 is set to arrive on Netflix on July 31.
