Sorry to fans of big blue crimefighters themed in the fashion of arachnids, but The Tick has officially been canceled by Amazon after just two seasons. The news was confirmed by creator Ben Edlund personally. However, there is still a little hope, as Edlund has made it clear he hopes to find a new home for the comic book adaptation. Whether or not that actually has a real shot at happening remains to be seen. For now at least, The Tick is no more.

The Tick was based on Ben Edlund's comic book series that initially debuted in 1986. Given the rise of comic book heroes in pop culture, Amazon thought the time might be right to bring this particular hero back to the small screen, this time portrayed by Peter Serafinowicz, who moviegoers may know from Guardians of the Galaxy or John Wick: Chapter 2. Unfortunately, the company didn't feel moving forward with a third season was prudent. Here's what Edlund had to say about it on Twitter.

"I'm sorry to say Amazon has chosen not to proceed with The Tick I'm not sorry to say I love this show, its cast, its story, and its message. Destiny demands that my compatriots and I now seek a new home for this series. Meanwhile thank u from my heart's bottom to all the fans who've shared their love with us and the show. Thank you sweet #LunaTicks and #LunaTickArmy for your militant affection :) We want to find a place to make more. That is the mission now and we are on it."

It's not uncommon these days for shows to be rescued elsewhere. Supergirl moved from CBS to The CW, Designated Survivor and Lucifer were both rescued by Netflix, Brooklyn Nine-Nine moved to NBC and The Mindy Project got picked up by Hulu, just to name a few. So what of The Tick? Could a different streaming service see some value in it? Everyone is vying for premium content to attract eyeballs these days and something with a built in fan base could be attractive to the right company.

This wasn't the first time The Tick has been brought to the small screen. There was an animated series which debuted in 1994 and ran for a total of three seasons. Fox also made a very short-lived live-action version of The Tick previously. That series debuted in 2001 and featured Patrick Warburton in the lead role. It was given the ax after just one season. So Amazon's version can, at the very least, say it did a little better than its predecessor.

Griffin Newman co-stars on the series as the titular hero's sidekick, with Jackie Earle Haley portraying the villainous baddie known as The Terror. Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Yara Martinez, Scott Speiser, Michael Cerveris, John Pirkis and Alan Tudyk also starred. The Tick season 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
