Fans of the classic 1993 baseball movie The Sandlot can start getting excited, as the writer and director of the original movie is bringing all of the characters back for a TV series sequel. On The Rain Delay podcast, franchise creator David Mickey Evans revealed he "just sold" a Sandlot sequel series to an unnamed streaming service, adding he's "about to get an order for the first two seasons." The director says he can't yet reveal which service will be streaming the show, but adds, "It doesn't take a genius to figure that out right now." That suggests the obvious answer of Netflix, although competing services like Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are certainly possibilities as well.
Evans stops short of revealing intricate details about the plot, but does confirm the plan is for it to be a straight sequel to the original Sandlot. He also implies the entire original cast is on board to reprise their roles. "I already got all the original cast members back. It takes place in 1984, when they're all like 33 years old and they all have children of their own, and that's all I can tell you," the filmmaker says. Because the original movie takes place in 1962, this sequel apparently takes place 22 years in the '80s to allow the grown-up child actors from the first movie to return as the same characters they had played before. By pointing out that these characters now have their own children, it seems the story might focus on their kids following in their parents' footsteps by forming a baseball team of their own.
The classic movie just celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, which saw The Sandlot briefly return to theaters and be given a new Blu-ray release. Although there were two direct-to-video sequels to be released in 2007 and 2009, neither quite reached the same level of appreciation as the 1993 original. By continuing the classic story in a new TV series, this could be the most exciting news yet for those who still hold the first movie in very high regard.
This project will be separate from another Sandlot revival currently in the works. Last fall, it was reported that a prequel movie to the original was being co-written by Evans and Austin Reynolds. While full plot details on that movie are yet to be revealed, what's known is that it will take place before the events of the original movie. This likely means that none of the original cast members will be returning, although it's possible some might still appear in cameo roles as different characters. The movie will be released for 20th Century Fox on an undisclosed date sometime in the future.
While the specific streamer hasn't yet been announced for the upcoming series, chances are that information will be coming sooner than later. While Evans didn't specify exactly which original cast members would be returning, he seems to be suggesting all of the child actors from the first movie will be reprising their roles.. Hopefully, we'll find out more soon. This information comes to us from The Rain Delay podcast.
