HBO has released The Outsider trailer and it looks intense. The limited series is all set to premiere on the network early next year. Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel of the same name, the new drama series explores the investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy and the mysterious force surrounding the case. King has given the show his seal of approval, declaring it to be "one of the best adaptations" of his work. "Hope you'll watch it." The author notoriously keeps his mouth shut about any of his adaptations that he doesn't deem worthy, so this is a good sign for horror fans.

Debuting on HBO, Sunday January 12th (9:00 PM ET/PT and 10:00 PM ET/PT) with two episodes sequentially, The Outsider is a 10-episode series that follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable. The trailer is full of suspense and mystery and it is sure to hook potential viewers.

The Outsider boasts a very impressive cast. Along with Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, the show also stars Jason Bateman (Arrested Development,) Bill Camp ("he Night Of), Mare Winningham (Georgia), Paddy Considine (In America), Julianne Nicholson (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Yul Vázquez (Divorce), Jeremy Bobb (The Knick), and Marc Menchaca (The Sinner). Bateman is also on board as an executive producer on the series.

The Outsider is the latest in a string of successful adaptions of Stephen King's works. Mr. Mercedes, Castle Rock, and The Mist are some of the more notable small screen adaptations to be released recently. In addition to the TV content, King's source material has fueled some major box office success with IT and IT Chapter Two, which could even go on to spawn a Pennywise spin-off. A Pet Semetary remake also recently hit theaters and the Gerald's Game adaptation was critically acclaimed. The author has been into a lot of the more recent takes on his work.

The Outsider is produced by Ben Mendelsohn. Actor and executive producer Jason Bateman also served as director on the first two episodes. The series was written by Richard Price (The Wire), and he serves as an executive producer too. Other executive producers include Andrew Bernstein, Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment, Jack Bender, Michael Costigan for Aggregate Films, and Dennis Lehane. The Outsider is produced by Bateman's Aggregrate Films and Temple Hill Entertainment in association with Civic Center Media.
