The Outsider season 2 is happening. HBO adapted Stephen King's 2018 novel into an acclaimed series that debuted earlier this year. The premium cable network has yet to formally confirm that the show will be returning. However, King himself recently let the news slip and firmly confirmed that we are getting at least one more season of the show.

During a recent interview, Stephen King was discussing his current dominance on TV, with The Stand coming out and Mr. Mercedes coming back. It was brought up that there are now two versions of the character Holly Gibneys on TV right now. Justine Lupe on Mr. Mercedes and Cynthia Erivo in The Outsider. In responding to his feelings on the matter, King had this to say.

"Cynthia may get that time, because there's going to be a second season of The Outsider as soon as they can get the production going. And she's terrific, but she's more someone who is kind of almost on the spectrum; a little bit of a savant with the memory of license plates and cars and baseball. One of the funniest things is she knows who's won all these baseball games going back to the '50s, but she never watches."

So there we have it. What remains unclear for the time being is the nature of the story. The Outsider season 1 explored the investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy and the mysterious force surrounding the case. The inaugural season completely used up Stephen King's source material, which begs the question; what will season 2 be about? King addressed the topic but refused to dish any details.

"I know exactly where it's going because I have seen some of the scripts. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. I'll just say that it's really great and a real spooky paranormal element."

Even though HBO hasn't confirmed the news, as of this writing, with scripts in hand this is as sure as things get these days. There is a chance, like any production right now, that things could change. Certain shows, such as I Am Not Okay With This and, more recently, Glow, had planned additional seasons canceled brought on by the mess of a year that has been 2020. This to say, plans could change between now and the time that it is safe for HBO to roll cameras on The Outsider season 2.

The cast for season 1 includes Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One), Bill Camp (The Night Of), Mare Winningham (Georgia, Paddy Considine (The Third Day), Julianne Nicholson (Law and Order: Criminal Intent), Yul Vazquez (Divorce), Jeremy Bobb (The Knick), Marc Menchaca (The Sinner) and Jason Bateman (Arrested Development). Bateman also served as a director and executive producer of the series. Aside from Cynthia Erivo, it is unclear at this time who would be returning. We'll be sure to keep you posted as further details are made available. This news comes to us via Entertainment Weekly.
