Jeff Bridges is heading back to the small screen, as The Big Lebowski star and screen legend will soon be returning to television with a starring role in an ongoing TV series. Called The Old Man, the series is written by Black Sails co-creators Join Steinberg and Robert Levine. Along with Bridges, Steinberg, and Levine, Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid's Tale), Dan Shotz, and David Schiff are executive producing. Produced by Fox 21 Television Studios in association with The Littlefield Company, the series was recently revealed by FX Entertainment's Nick Grad and Gina Balian as a new show for FX. "Jeff Bridges is an iconic, extraordinary actor and to have him as the star of this series is an incredible moment for FX," Grad is quoted as saying.

Based on the novel of the same name by author Thomas Perry, The Old Man follows retired CIA operative Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges). Ever since parting ways with the CIA decades prior, Chase has been enjoying his life off the grid. To his neighbors, two dogs, and daughter with whom he keeps in touch with on the phone, Chase appears to be nothing more than a harmless retiree living in Vermont. However, the "old man" is forced to revert back to his training as an operative when an assassin attempts to murder him. To stay alive, Chase must confront the assailants who still want him dead so many years past his retirement.

Jeff Bridges began his legendary career by appearing in the late '50s TV series Sea Hunt, followed by appearances on The Lloyd Bridges Show in the early '60s. In the following years, his time on television was much more limited, with the actor typically appearing only in one-off episodes or made-for-TV movies. His most recent appearance on television was nearly a decade ago when he hosted Saturday Night Live with Eminem and Lil Wayne as the musical guests. It was the actor's second time hosting the sketch comedy series, as he previously served as the host for the show in 1983.

Of course, Bridges has been best known for years as a prominent movie star, appearing in several very memorable roles on the big screen. Easily one of his most beloved performances is as The Dude in the 1998 comedy The Big Lebowski, which is still often quoted frequently by fans of the movie. In 2009, the actor also snagged an Academy Award for his role as Otis Blake in Crazy Heart. More recently, the actor appeared in movies like Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Bad Times at the El Royale, and as the narrator of the documentary Living in the Future's Past.

Whether he's on the big or small screen, Jeff Bridges always entertains. For any fan of the veteran actor, The Old Man is definitely going to be a series to check out. Production on the pilot episode will begin this fall, and while we don't yet have an official release date, the series will likely arrive on FX sometime in 2020. This news comes to us from Deadline.
