All good things must come to an end, and such is the case with The Magicians. The series has been canceled by SyFy, meaning that the upcoming season 5 finale will serve as the series finale. It's unclear at what point the network opted not to renew the series, but one can only hope that the final episode will manage to deliver a satisfying conclusion, given the short notice.

The Magicians season 5 finale is set to air on April 1. The episode, titled Fillory and Further will bring things to a close. The series was adapted from the trilogy of novels by author Lev Grossman and was the longest-running show currently airing on SyFy. The network had this to say in a statement.

"The Magicians has been a part of our SYFY family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers, and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever."

John McNamara and Sera Gamble created the series and also served as showrunners. The cast includes Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran and Trevor Einhorn. Several of the cast and crew members have taken to social media to share their thoughts following the cancellation. Gamble, taking to Twitter, had this to say.

"Hello, Magicians. Sad news today. Getting to make this show, with a family that is both talented and kind, for a huge-hearted audience, has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. And a true example of epic cooperative magic. I just want to say: thank you."

Lev Grossman's trilogy of novels consists of The Magicians, The Magician King and The Magician's Land. The series centers around Brakebills University, a secret institution that specializes in magic. There, in the middle of a system of unorthodox education and spellcasting, a group of twenty-somethings realizes that a magical fantasy world they read about as children is quite real and poses a major threat to humanity.

This comes as most major networks and streaming services are fighting for content that can cut through the noise. SyFy recently handed out a series order to a Day of the Dead TV show, as well as Chucky, which takes place within the Child's Play franchise and comes directly from creator Don Mancini. The Magicians is set to return with the ninth episode of its final season, Cello Squirrel Daffodil on Wednesday, March 4. Be sure to check out some of the reactions from the cast and crew below.
