Every single episode of The Golden Girls is coming to Disney+ in 2021. During a Disney+ press event to promote the launch of the international service Star on Wednesday, several announcements were made about the House of Mouse's plans for the streamer. With Disney+ eventually set to serve as the "exclusive streaming home" for Disney's iconic catalog, licensing deals will start flipping over to the streamer as it continues to grow its base of nearly 100 million subscribers.
Star will be a hub within Disney+ offering movies and television content intended for an adult audience. This also opens the door for many, many more titles to become available on the streamer. Luke Bradley-Jones, SVP of direct-to-consumer and general manager for Disney+ EMEA, singled out The Golden Girls in particular as one show in particular he's worked hard on getting, confirming that the series will hit the streamer this year.
"I've been working hard on that. Coming this summer, you will have every season of The Golden Girls, every ever episode," he said.
Currently, The Golden Girls is streaming on Hulu in the United States, but it does not include "every ever episode." Last year, the streamer pulled the season 3 episode "Mixed Blessings" due to a scene with Rose and Blanche wearing mud facials which could have been interpreted as a blackface joke. The decision to pull the episode was met with backlash with many critics labeling the action as "overcorrection," but "Mixed Blessings" is still not available to watch on Hulu.
The Golden Girls is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. The series originally ran for seven seasons between 1985 and 1992, though fans have continuously binged the classic episodes in the years ever since. The series stars Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty as four mature women who share a friendship and a home in Miami, Florida. Each of the characters had their own distinct personalities and contributed to the series in their own special ways.
During its run, The Golden Girls won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series on two occasions. All four lead actresses also won an Emmy Award for their performances, a rare feat for sitcom stars. The legacy of the beloved series remains very strong to this day, having inspired things like a touring puppet show recreating classic scenes, a themed restaurant in Manhattan, and even a Golden Girls cruise for superfans of the show.
Of course, the news of The Golden Girls coming to Disney+ is getting a lot of subscribers pretty excited. As one fan puts it in an amusing tweet, "Disney+ will soon have the original Muppet Show AND The Golden Girls so I guess it's fine if lockdown never ends."
Disney+ is set to launch Star on Feb. 23. Its debut will instantly see 276 movies along with many popular television shows. The Golden Girls will not be available with the launch of Star but will be added to the streamer at some point this summer. This news comes to us from Deadline.
