HBO's The Deuce is returning for a second season next month and it will take place in 1977, five years after the events of the first season. chronicles the rise of the porn culture in New York City from its infancy in the early 1970s to the mid 1980s and beyond as well as its massive effect on the sex industry as well as sex workers. The Deuce was created by David Simon and George Pelecanos, who are best known for The Wire. Simon and Pelecanos conducted a considerable amount of research in order to tell the tale of the porn industry in the 1970s.

Season 1 of The Deuce took place in the early 1970s when the pornography business in New York City was in its beginnings, but Season 2 shifts gears and brings us five years into the future where everything is flourishing. Maggie Gyllenhaal's Candy character seems to have stepped up her game in a major way and everything seems to be going well. David Simon and George Pelecanos have indicated that each season will contain a time jump, which means that Season 3 will more than likely be the downfall of the industry in the 1980s.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's Candy character's directing career is in full swing in the trailer for Season 2 of The Deuce. Candy may have had a little bit of extra help from James Franco's Vincent character. Many were surprised to see that Franco is back on board for the show playing twin brothers Frankie and Vincent after being accused of sexual misconduct earlier this year. Multiple women came forward with similar stories, but Franco seems to have come out of the ordeal relatively unscathed.

The official synopsis for The Deuce Season 2 finds the hit show returning at the height of disco and punk rock in New York City. Police corruption is at an all-time high and drugs are everywhere. The porn industry is in its golden age and the West Coast has a rising industry as well, but for now the place to be is New York. With any big rise, it's bound to see a fall, which will probably be chronicled in the next season. The official synopsis reads.

"Amid a city that is as culturally dynamic as it is dystopic, the show finds its protagonists living at the apex of the Golden Age of Porn, when the dream of a mainstream X-rated film business is suddenly a credible reality, and the culture of pornography and its blatant commodification of sex is finding increasing traction among more and more Americans. Disco and punk are in full swing, and police corruption and political tolerance for New York's midtown demimonde is at its height. And the Mafia, the early backer of pornography at the moment when courts declared for its legality, is now seemingly poised to reap great profits. A comparable - and, in some ways, more professional - porn industry is rising on the West Coast as well. But for now, New York is holding its own in a city flush with movies, music and art, as the drug-fueled party rages around the clock."

The Deuce Season 2 consists of nine episodes, premiering on HBO September 9th. James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal return to star, alongside Gary Carr, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Margarita Levieva, Dominique Fishback, Emily Meade, Lawrence Gillard, Jr., Chris Bauer, Michael Rispoli, Chris Coy, and Luke Kirby.
