The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is almost here. To get us prepared for the release later this summer, Netflix has released the first trailer and it looks mind blowing. Jim Henson and Frank Oz's The Dark Crystal was not a box office smash upon its release in 1982, earning a little over $40 million from an initial budget of $25 million. However, it has since become a cult favorite and the new Netflix show has been highly anticipated for a long time now.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance trailer is more than likely what fans have been waiting nearly 40 years to see. The ten episodes that make up the new Netflix series are set before the events of the movie and visual effects and original puppetry are on full display here in our first in-depth look. This looks like something Jim Henson would be proud of and something only he could have inspired.

Based on The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson's groundbreaking 1982 movie, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance tells a new and epic story, which is set many years before the events of the first movie. One of the big selling points for fans is the fact that the series was made using the classic puppetry techniques with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

The Gelfling characters are voiced by Taron Egerton (Rian), Anya Taylor-Joy (Brea), Nathalie Emmanuel (Deet), Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander. The Skeksis & Mystics are voiced by Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg. Aughra will be voiced by Donna Kimball. Additional characters will also be voiced by puppeteers from the production, including Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid as Hup.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premieres August 30th exclusively on Netflix. Along with Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, The Dark Crystal prequel series is one of the most anticipated events in the streaming platform's history and fans of the original are curious to see how it stands up. While that is unclear at the moment, it certainly looks amazing and like it cost a lot of money to produce. With that being said, you can check out the trailer below, thanks to the Netflix YouTube channel.
