The Boys has officially started production on season 3. Created by Eric Kripke and based on the comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a satirical take on the superhero genre that has become one of today's most popular television shows. As fans anxiously await the third season, Kripke took to Twitter on Wednesday to reveal that production has officially begun with the first photo from the set.

The photo reveals a golden-colored statue of Homelander, the leader of the Seven played by Antony Starr. For now, Kripke is stopping short of revealing any of the actual characters as they'll appear in season 3, but with production currently underway, it's a matter of time before more photos and sneak peeks from the set will be revealed.

It had been expected that season 3 of The Boys would start shooting very soon. Earlier this month, series star Karl Urban revealed that he was leaving New Zealand for the set to step back into the role of Billy Butcher. This followed a previous social media post from Urban's co-star Jack Quaid announcing his own arrival to the set of The Boys, suggesting that filming was just weeks away after the stars could quarantine.

Along with Urban as Billy Butcher and Quaid as Hughie Campbell, the titular group in The Boys is also made up of Laz Alonso as Mother's Milk, Karen Fukuhara as the Female, and Tomer Capon as Frenchie. With each joining the group for their own reasons, the Boys serve as a vigilante group whose mission is to keep corrupted superheroes in check.

The Boys also stars Antony Starr as Homelander, the leader of a Justice League-like group known as the Seven. During the first two seasons, the group has also featured Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Dominique McElligott as Queen Maeve, Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Chase Crawford as the Deep, Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir, and Aya Cash as Stormfront. The series also stars Elisabeth Shue, Giancarlo Esposito, Colby Minifie, and Ann Cusack.

Praised for its acting, writing, and humor as a spoof of modern superhero movies and TV shows, The Boys is one of the most popular programs of today. With word of mouth turning more and more fans on to the Amazon series as each episode dropped, the show is on track to be even more popular when season 3 premieres. The Boys has even been named by former U.S. president Barack Obama as one of his favorite shows of 2020.

As production has officially kicked off as planned, we'll likely see new episodes of The Boys hitting Amazon Prime Video this fall, but an official release date hasn't yet been revealed. In any case, it's just a matter of time before we see what comes next for Billy and the Boys following the events of season 2's compelling finale. The first two seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Amazon Prime. This news comes to us from Eric Kripke on Twitter.
