The Boys picked up six nominations at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, and that even includes a nomination for the prestigious award for Outstanding Drama Series. Premiering on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, The Boys was developed by Eric Kripke and was based on the original comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. After a bloody yet acclaimed second season, the show has impressed critics and audiences enough to make a splash at this year's Emmys.

At the show, which will air in September, The Boys will have a chance to win the Outstanding Drama Series award. The other nominees are Bridgerton (Netflix), The Crown (Netflix), The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu), Lovecraft Country (HBO), The Mandalorian (Disney+), Pose (FX), and This Is Us (NBC). Given the stiff competition, scoring the win will certainly be challenging, but most fans should be able to agree that the show is certainly deserving.

The Boys has also been nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for Starlight's song "Never Truly Vanish" from the episode "The Big Ride"; Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) for the season 2 finale "What I Know"; Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or Movie; Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for "What I Know"; and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) for the series premiere "The Name of the Game."

Serving as a spoof of superhero fiction, The Boys is set in a fictional world that delves into the corrupt nature of superheroes behind the scenes. Banding together to keep superheroes from abusing their abilities is a group of vigilantes known as the Boys, led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). Succeeding with its satirization of superhero movies while still nailing the dramatic elements, the show has only gotten more popular after premiering its second season last year.

The first two seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Season 3 is now in production and the new episodes are likely to arrive sometime this year. One new addition to the cast is Jensen Ackles, one of the stars of Supernatural who will make his debut as Soldier Boy in season 3. The actor has teased his upcoming appearance by posting set photos and official images of him in the Soldier Boy outfit that have since been revealed.

"Soldier Boy is the original badass," The Boys costume designer Laura Jean Shannon said in a statement when the look was revealed. "Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier's practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that."

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, the 73rd Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, September 19th, from 8:00-11:00 p.m ET (5:00-8:00 p.m. PT). It will also be made available to stream live and on demand on the streaming platform Paramount+.
