After years of surviving impossible scenarios, the characters of The 100 are gearing up to say goodbye. The series showrunner Jason Rothenberg took to twitter on Sunday to announce the sad news that season 7 will be its last.

"With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last. We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!"

A successor to UPN and The WB, The CW launched 12 years ago, and has carved a place for itself among the other big networks. Catering to the 18-49 demographic, the network has become home to an extensive DC universe as well as a handful of soap-opera level dramas. A new era for the network is being ushered in as The 100 joins other long-running, cornerstone series coming to an end next season.

Supernatural will end after 15 seasons, though its legacy is expected to live on in its powerful fanbase. The show that brought The CW into the comic book fandom, Arrow, will end after its eighth. iZombie, Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend said goodbye this year. While fans mourn the loss of a handful of shows, a slew of freshman series are being sent their way. All American, Roswell, New Mexico and In The Dark have officially been welcomed back, and the highly anticipated Batwoman will premiere this fall, and Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene will follow in 2020.

The 100 was originally based on the book series by Kass Morgan which was unpublished at the time, but it diverged from the novels over the course of its run. The 100 takes place in a dystopian future where the Earth is rendered uninhabitable. It follows a group of 100 young criminals sent from their home in a space station back to the surface to test if it is survivable. As the seasons unfold, our band of main characters are faced with indigenous people that range from "wildling" to The Matrix and major decisions about life and death.

The settings of each season are vastly different from each other, particularly in the later seasons. But, fans can always count on The 100's staples: moral ambiguity, ruthless antiheroes, political strife, genocide, and an "other". The violent imagery and questionable ethics often earned the show its later time slot. It is also one of the few series on The CW allotted a shorter season of about 13 to 16 episodes. Season 7 is expected to reach the latter.

Fans eagerly await to see how Rothenberg will wrap up the many storylines. Will Bellamy and Clarke finally get together? Will Earth ever be safe enough to live on? Which side of right and wrong will our heroes land? Season 6 finale will air on Aug 6. Check out Rothenberg's tweet.
