Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren are reuniting once again for an all-new action drama TV series. Hailing from Tony Krantz's Flame Ventures, the project is executive produced by Stallone and will star Lundgren in the lead role. Reportedly, the project was sold at all three broadcast network pitch meetings for Fox, CBS, and NBC, also drawing attention from streamers Netflix and Apple. Stallone may also direct the pilot, with writer Ken Sanzel (Numbers) serving as showrunner and exec producing along with Stallone, Krantz, Balboa Productions' Braden Aftergood, and Zero Gravity's Craig Baumgarten.
In the series, Dolph Lundgren will star as a covert operative at the Department of Safety and Security at the UN. The character is described as the UN's secret special agent, a one-man S.W.A.T. team and hostage negotiator. Not much else has been revealed about the show beyond this basic premise, but it's admittedly already very easy to picture Lundgren in the part. At this time, Stallone is only attached to the project in a behind-the-scenes capacity, but it's possible he could wind up appearing on the series as well. One also has to wonder if any of the other alumni from The Expendables could be coming in for a cameo appearance.
The partnership between Stallone and Lundgren dates back to the 1985 sequel Rocky IV, which was one of Lundgren's first movie roles. Lundgren memorably portrayed infamous Rocky foe Ivan Drago in the movie, controversially killing Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in a brutal boxing match. By the end, Drago would get his comeuppance when Rocky Balboa defeated him in a hard-fought bout. Still, Lundgren wouldn't be through with the character just yet, as he recently reprised the role in last year's sequel Creed II. In that movie, Drago's son Viktor (Florian "Big Nasty" Munteanu) follows in his father's footsteps to take on the son of Apollo Creed (Michael B. Jordan). Because Stallone starred in the sequel as well, it marked another reunion for the Rocky star and Lundgren.
Stallone and Lundgren also reunited for the Expendables movie series, which teamed together many of the action genre's most well-known actors. It appears they're all pretty close now, as a new video just recently went viral of Stallone and Lundgren with Arnold Schwarzenegger at Schwarzenegger's residence. "We are aging so well, like a couple of saddles in the desert," Stallone jokes in the video, which was posted to his Instagram account. Whereas in the '90s it felt like all of these big names were competitors, it's now clear they're very much on the same team. The gang will soon enough all be back at it together on the big screen as well when The Expendables 4 inevitably hits theaters.
Lundgren recently had a prominent role in the DCEU, as he portrayed King Nereus in last year's superhero movie Aquaman. As for Stallone, the actor will soon reprise the role of John Rambo one more time in the upcoming sequel Rambo: Last Blood. That movie will hit theaters on Sept. 20, 2019. News of Stallone and Lundgren's new project comes to us from Deadline.
