When DC's new streaming service was announced, this here horror fan felt an overwhelming sense of 'meh.' I'm not the world's biggest comic book fan, and the thought of having to shell out more cash for yet another streaming service wasn't a high priority of mine. But that was before James Wan and Gary Dauberman announced their reboot of Swamp Thing starring Derek Mears (Friday the 13th). Now I'm all ready, set and gunning to subscribe to the new service to check out this upcoming series. And it looks like we'll all be able to check it out sooner rather than later as today we have word that it was just announced at WonderCon that Swamp Thing will premiere on the DC Universe streaming service on May 31.

This new series will follow the character of Abby Arcane who returns home to Houma, Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. Go figure that once she's back home, she develops what the powers that be behind the scenes are referring to as "a bond" with scientist Alec Holland. After Holland tragically dies, Arcane discovers that Holland may not be dead after all. Cue the rock music and a big muscular collection of moss in the shape of Bane rising out of the swamp in slow motion, and with a vengeance.

Derek Mears will be playing the role of the man in the suit aka the one and only Swamp Thing himself, while IT: Chapter Two's adult Stanley Uris aka Andy Bean will be portraying Swamp Thing's human counterpart Alec Holland. Crystal Reed will join Mears and Bean as Abby Arcane, Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu, Virginia Madsen as Maria Sunderland, Will Patton as Avery Sunderland, Henderson Wade as Matt Cable, Kevin Durand as Jason Woodrue, and Jennifer Beals as Lucilia Cable. Ian Ziering rounds out the cast as Daniel Cassidy / Blue Devil, along with Leonardo Nam as Harlan Edwards.

The pilot episode is already in the can and was directed by Len Wiseman, who is best known for directing most of those Underworld movies starring Kate Beckinsale, plus Live Free or Die Hard starring Bruce Willis and Total Recall) starring Colin Farrell. Wiseman helmed the Swamp Thing pilot episode from a screenplay (or are we still calling them teleplays?) written by Mark Verheiden (Timecop, The Mask, My Name Is Bruce) and Gary Dauberman. Dauberman is best known for penning some of the top horror hits of recent years including It, It:ChapterTwo, Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle Comes Home, The Nun, and the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot).

This superhero horror romance drama is based on the classic character Swamp Thing created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Atomic Monster Productions and Warner Bros. Television are behind this new take on the comic and Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, James Wan, Michael Clear, and Len Wiseman will serve as executive producers. Brian Tyler will compose the sure to be ominous music for the series. Again, make sure to strap on your mudding boots as James Wan and Gary Dauberman's reboot of Swamp Thing will premiere on the DC Universe streaming service on May 31. Make sure to mark your calendars right now as this is sure to be something you don't want to miss. This update comes to us via Deadline.
