After previously eyeing actresses Gemma Atkinson and Claire Holt, CBS has cast Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee) as Kara Zor-El in Supergirl. Producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), who co-created the series with Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) revealed at the TCA Winter Tour last week that casting was to be announced soon, since production on the pilot will begin in the near future.

The series will center on Kara Zor-El, who has been hiding in plain sight on Earth for several years, following the destruction of her home planet Krypton. At the age of 24, she decides to finally embrace her incredible abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. It still has yet to be confirmed if Kara's superhero cousin, Superman, will appear on the series. TV Line reports that other main roles which still need to be cast are Alex, Kara's "science-minded foster sister," Cat Grant, the CEO of CatCo, the media conglomerate that Kara works for, James Olsen and Wynn Schott, Kara's CatCo co-workers and Hank Henshaw, director of Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), who becomes obsessed with Supergirl.

CBS issued a series commitment for Supergirl back in September, with series creators Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler executive producing alongside Sarah Schechter for Warner Bros. Television. Melissa Benoist is best known for playing Marley Rose on Fox's Glee, and she also played Nicole, the love interest for Miles Teller's Andrew in the Best Picture nominee Whiplash. Her other TV credits include guest-starring appearances on Homeland and The Good Wife.
