Fans have known for quite some time that The CW's Supergirl will introduce the new villain Reign in Season 3, a.k.a. Samantha Arias. So far this season, we have seen some of Samantha's powers, along with her dreams that hint she may have been originally from Krypton, but we haven't seen what Samantha will actually look like as the DC Worldkiller known as Reign, until now, with the first photo that debuted earlier today. While it remains to be seen when we'll actually see her in this costume on the show, that moment may be coming sooner rather than later.

Samantha was introduced as a single mother who recently just learned about the incredible super powers she possesses. She was also named as the new head of L-Corp, taking over for Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), who herself is taking over the CatCo reigns for Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart). It's possible that this change from single mother Samantha Arias to DC villain Reign could be coming in the mid-season finale, to set up a back half of the season where Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) is set to do battle with Reign.

Reign was first introduced in the DC Comics in the New 52's Supergirl Vol 6 #5, which debuted in March, 2012, created by Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar. Reign was one of the five Worldkillers, along with Deimax, Flower of Heaven, Perrilus, created on Krypton by Zor-El, who later would regret creating these ultra-powerful beings, most of which were genetically modified alien species. In the comics, they all survived the destruction of Krypton, although they couldn't remember anything except for their name, purpose and their origin, and after studying a number of planets, Reign settled on Earth, since it was the only planet in the universe with a Kryptonian survivor, Kara Zor-El.

It remains to be seen how closely Reign's origin story from the New 52 comics will be explored, or if the series will diverge from the comics. It will be interesting to see if Reign has a part to play in next month's four-show crossover, Crisis on Earth-X, a four-hour crossover that will unfold over two nights, Monday, November 27, with new episodes of Supergirl and Arrow, and Tuesday, November 28, with new episodes of The Flash and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The crossover features all of these heroes converging for the wedding of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West (Candice Patton), although the celebration is short-lived when, villains from Earth-X crash the festivities with a deadly agenda.

The series also went through a bit of a casting shakeup this summer, with Smallville alum Erica Durance coming aboard to replace Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Kara's Kryptonian birth mother. With the new season just getting under way, it will be interesting to see when Reign will fully come into play as the primary villain this season. While we wait for more on this intriguing nemesis for Supergirl, take a look at the first photo of Reign below, courtesy of DC Comics.
