Last month, CBS announced the renewals of 11 shows, including hits such as Survivor, Elementary, 2 Broke Girls and more, with shows such as The Big Bang Theory and NCIS already picked up for new seasons. One of the most glaring omissions in the network's slate of renewals was the freshman superhero series Supergirl, which has been faring quite well in the ratings in its Monday night 8 PM time slot. As it turns out, there was a reason that the show wasn't announced for a Season 2 pickup, because the show is shifting to The CW Network this fall.

There had long been rumors that the show would eventually end up at The CW, which is co-owned by both CBS and Warner Bros., since The CW currently airs a trio of hit superhero shows, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, the later of which debuted in January. Variety reports that CBS chairman Nina Tassler wanted a project with a female superhero and eventually green lit the series, even though there were still rumors the show would end up on The CW, despite being in development at CBS. Speculation was fueled even more when CBS and The CW teamed up for an unprecedented event, with The CW's The Flash and Supergirl crossover debuting in late March.

During its first season on CBS, Supergirl averaged a 2.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic with 10.03 million viewers in Nielsen's live+7 estimates. The show was the network's top-rated first-year series, while also becoming their "youngest-skewing" series, with median age of 55.6. Still, the show was down sharply in ratings, when compared to the comedy shows that aired in the same time slot last year. The crossover episode with The Flash star Grant Gustin posted a 2.5 rating in 18-49 and 9.6 million total viewers in L+7, the show's best performance in the back half of Season 1.

Supergirl's shift to The CW marks the first time ever a show that originated on CBS has moved to its sister network The CW, despite the network consistently denying rumors that the show would change networks. However, last year, another one of CBS' networks, Showtime, developed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but when the cable network passed, The CW picked it up, where it became a big hit and scored an Golden Globe win for star/series creator Rachel Bloom. The CW also picked up the short-lived series Ringer after it was being developed by CBS in the pilot phase, back in 2011.

It remains to be seen if The CW will keep Supergirl in its Monday 8 PM time slot when it debuts its second season. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend debuted in the Monday night time slot this fall, with Reign shifting to the Monday 8 PM slot earlier this month, after Crazy Ex-Girlfriend wrapped up its first year run. Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the title character, alongside Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, Calista Flockhart, David Harewood, Peter Facinelli and Laura Benanti. Stay tuned for more regarding Supergirl Season 2 as soon as more details arrive.
