Stewart the corgi, a canine actor who regularly appeared on the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Cheddar, has passed away at 13 years old. His owner confirmed the dog's passing on an Instagram account created for Stewart and his sister Stella, with whom he shares the role on the TV series. Written on a photo of Stewart in a wagon at the beach, a message explains how the dog was given one last day of fun in the sun before he was put to sleep.

"We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other's company. Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah."

On the sitcom, Cheddar was the pet of Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) and his husband, Kevin (Marc Evan Jackson). He first appears in the first season episode "The Party," making further appearances in all six seasons of the series. One of his most well-known episodes came in Season 3 when Jake and Amy are house-sitting for Holt and accidentally leave the door open, leaving Cheddar to escape. Fortunately, they end up finding him at his special walk spot. Other episodes establish just how smart and well-trained Cheddar really is, and as Holt would say, the dog is definitely not "some common bitch."

Brooklyn Nine-Nine first premiered on Fox in 2013, later moving to NBC following its fifth season. The animated series follows a crew of NYPD officers portrayed by an ensemble cast, each with their own distinctly hilarious personalities. Along with Braugher and Jackson, this includes former Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lu Truglio, and Chelsea Peretti. For the animal lovers watching, however, Cheddar had become a fan favorite throughout the dog's various appearances on the series.

2019 has been a bad year for animal celebrities. Tardar Sauce, better known as Grumpy Cat, suddenly passed away in May because of a urinary tract infection. She was only 7 years old and probably the most popular cat in the world at the time of her death. Following the release of the new Pet Sematary, one of its animal cast members died soon after as well. Leo the cat, who portrayed the zombie cat Church in the horror movie, also unexpectedly died that same month. He was the one featured on all of the movie's posters and marketing materials, and also at the height of his fame when he died.

As Stewart is not the only corgi to have played Cheddar, the character may still remain on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with Stella and other dogs filling in. Still, Stewart played Cheddar the most on the series, and was clearly a very good boy. You can take a look at Stewart's farewell post below, courtesy of Stewart and Stella on Instagram.
