YouTube Red has released the first trailer for Step Up: High Water, the latest offering from the streaming service to be based on a hit movie series. Production is already under way on the Karate Kid revival series entitled Cobra Kai, with YouTube Red also ordering a pilot for Impulse, based on the same novel series that spawned the movie Jumper. This time around, Lionsgate is teaming up with YouTube red for Step Up: High Water, which is based off the hit Step Up movies that have grossed over $650 million worldwide.
Welcome to Atlanta, home of High Water, the city's most cutthroat performing arts school. When twins Tal (Petrice Jones) and Janelle (Lauryn Alisa McClain) relocate from Ohio, they find themselves thrust into a world where every move is a test. As they attempt to navigate their new world, on and off the dance floor, they'll discover just how deep they're willing to dig to realize their dreams and seize their moment. Based on the fan favorite films, the Step Up series is a heart-pounding, sexy, music-filled drama about dancers in a contemporary performing arts school.
Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton, all producers of the original Step Up films, will executive produce the series, along with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum, who both co-starred in the original Step Up film. The original Step Up (2006) featured Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. Four more films followed in quick succession, Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up: 3D, Step Up: Revolution and Step Up: All In, as the franchise grew into a wildly popular global dance and film phenomenon. The last two films of the Step Up series were released by Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment label, which is working on the new Jumper TV series as well as this show. Here's what executive producers Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton said in a joint statement.
"The Step Up franchise has been a significant and joy-filled part of all of our lives for over a decade, and introduced the world to Channing and Jenna, who we are so excited to be collaborating with on this show. This original series is a natural extension of our creative passion, and we cannot wait to inspire a whole new audience with our partners at YouTube Red, which has always been an organic online home for many dancers, and a vital part of the dance community."
The cast for this new YouTube Red series also includes Ne-Yo, Naya Rivera, Faizon Love, Jade Chynoweth, Eric Graise and Terrence Green.
