Are we getting a Star Wars Rebels sequel series? That's the fancy new rumor floating around right now, with emphasis on the word rumor. With The Rise of Skywalker in theaters, Lucasfilm is set to take a several year break from the movies, which will leave them more time to focus on the TV side of a galaxy far, far away. While that will certainly include live-action shows like The Mandalorian, it looks like we're also going to be picking up with the Ghost crew once more for a new adventure.

Again, before digging in we must caution that this is just a rumor for the time being. Until some of this information is corroborated elsewhere, it shouldn't be regarded as a certainty. That said, according to a new report from a fan site, series creator Dave Filoni is currently in the works on a Star Wars Rebels sequel show that is set to debut in 2020. Taking to their YouTube channel, here's what was said about the alleged project.

"So what we've heard is that the Star Wars Rebels sequel show is in development, it is gonna be animated, it is set for 2020, this year... That's almost a given, too... In the development process, that's natural for it to come now. Resistance is winding down this year. The show will star Ahsoka and Sabine, again, another given, but we've got confirmation of that, and we've heard throughout the months that Dave Filoni is also attached to an animated series. We're assuming it's this one."

Star Wars: Resistance is wrapping up its two-season run. On July 19, 2018, Lucasfilm announced at San Diego Comic-Con that The Clone Wars would return with 12 new episodes to be released on Disney+ during the service's first year. The new season will be its final and is set to premiere in February 2020. With that in mind, it would make a great deal of sense for Lucasfilm to have something on the backburner. And given the love for Star Wars Rebels, coupled with the fact that there is plenty of story to tell, this all seems to line up. Speaking further, the report elaborated on what to expect.

"It's not going to be called Star Wars Rebels, we have no idea what it's gonna be called... I'm excited because this continues the story of Ahsoka, and we'll get to see what she's doing. We haven't heard about Ezra and Thrawn, but I'm assuming that they'd be in this series... I did hear that the animation is supposed to be a lot tighter than it was for Rebels [in its] four-season run... They're probably into Season 2 by this point."

Fans will surely recall that Star Wars Rebels ended its run with Ezra blasting off into space with Thrawn into the unknown. The show wrapped up by revealing that Ahsoka and Sabine had made it through the events of Return fo the Jedi. With the Empire defeated, they were heading off to go find Ezra, who is still alive and out there somewhere.

Presumably, this is where the show would pick up. Odds are, if this is true, we'll hear something from Lucasfilm in the coming months. With Star Wars Celebration scheduled for August, it would be the perfect place for them to debut a trailer. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the alleged project are made available. This news comes to us from the Kessel Run Transmissions YouTube channel.
