Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been a big success at the box office for Disney and Lucasfilm, which is probably very good news for Star Wars fans. The movie did a few risky things, but perhaps most importantly, it was the first time a character from an animated Star Wars series was brought into live-action in the form of Saw Gerrera. The character first showed up in Star Wars: The Clone Wars but now, he will be showing up on Disney XD's Star Wars Rebels. To hype up the event, a new trailer for the upcoming two-part Star Wars Rebels episode has been released online.

Disney XD dropped the trailer on their YouTube channel recently, and it primarily focused on the return of Saw Gerrera to the animated Star Wars universe. The two-part special, titled "Ghosts of Geonosis," is going to have Forest Whitaker reprising his role as Saw Gerrera from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and these two episodes will be heavily focused on him, as evidenced by this trailer. The trailer itself features a good amount of Star Wars: Rogue One footage interweaved with footage from the upcoming Star Wars Rebels special to provide some context, and it is pretty effective.

The events in Star Wars Rebels take place a few years prior to the events depicted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so Saw Gerrera appears to be a bit more put together in these episodes of the series than he was in the latest Star Wars movie. That said, he still looks to be his extremist, anti-hero self, just with a little bit more mental stability. It looks like the crew of the Ghost ship are going to have to go on a mission to save Saw Gerrera, which is interesting since the Rebellion and Saw are at odds with one another in Rogue One. Perhaps we will get to see where the divide occurs.

For those who may not know, the character of Saw Gerrera was created by George Lucas. He first appeared in a four-part run of episodes on Star Wars: The Clone Wars during the fifth season. The arc featured Saw and his sister Steela fighting with Ondarian Rebels against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. They were aided by Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano, but the end of the arc was very tragic for Saw. Spoilers if you haven't watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but his sister Steela died and that sort of pushed Saw into his extremist ways.

Star Wars Rebels is becoming an increasingly more important part of the new Star Wars canon, so much so that there were a ton of references to the show in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Bringing Saw Gerrera into the fold during Star Wars Rebels Season 3 will only help cement the show as essential viewing for Star Wars fans. "Ghosts of Geonosis" is set to air on Disney XD on Saturday, January 7. Be sure to check out the new trailer for the upcoming two-part Star Wars Rebels event for yourself below.
