While it went largely unnoticed last week, an episode of the animated series Star vs. The Forces Of Evil made TV history. The Season 2 episode "Just Friends," the 39th of this season which aired on February 24, featured the first ever same-sex kiss that was ever shown on a Disney animated show. In fact, there was actually more than one same-sex kiss during this brief scene, which you can see below.
The video of the scene comes from Disney Television Animation News, with Mashable reporting that the first same-sex kiss comes at 1:29 mark. The scene features the title character Star, voiced by The Middle star Eden Sher, who attends a boy band concert with Marco (Adam McArthur) and another girl. While they are both signing along to the song, entitled "Just Friends," Star notices that practically everyone around her has started kissing each other, including Marco kissing the other girl. One of the first couples we see kissing is a homosexual male couple. There is another scene shortly thereafter where Marco notices Star is gone, surrounded by couples kissing, many of whom are female couples.
This episode is a big step in the right direction, as far as the LGBTQ community is concerned. Disney came under fire in 2014 after it was learned that the Disney Channel censored an episode of Gravity Falls that featured a lesbian couple and a transgender symbol. LGBTQ advocates have long wanted to see Disney incorporate a same-sex couple into one of their movies and/or TV shows. According to the site Unicorn Botty, the studio recently hired a transgender cartoonist to work on an upcoming animated series entitled Country Club, and they have also hinted at making a movie centering on a LGBTQ princess character.
Just a few days after this episode aired, Disney XD renewed this animated series for a fourth season, before Season 3 has even aired, which is scheduled to debut this summer. The network also renewed Milo Murphy's Law, starring Weird Al Yankovic, as part of the network's upfront presentation. The network revealed that, during the 2016 season, combined for more than 100 million consumer views combined during 2016 across Disney XD's linear, digital, social and global platforms.
The show follows Star Butterfly (Eden Sher), a fiercely awesome teen princess from another dimension, as she navigates high school, embarks on dimension-hopping adventures across the multiverse, and battles arch-nemesis Ludo and his monstrous forces of evil alongside her best friend Marco Diaz. The voice cast includes Sher as Star Butterfly, Alan Tudyk voicing dual roles as Star's nemesis Ludo and her dad, King Butterfly, Nia Vardalos as Star's adopted mom on Earth, Mrs. Diaz; Artt Butler as Star's adopted dad on Earth, Mr. Diaz, Jenny Slate as Pony Head and Dee Dee Rescher as Skullnick. Star vs. The Forces of Evil: Star and Marco's Guide to Mastering Every Dimension, a hardcover book based on the series and written by the series' supervising producer Dominic Bisignano and Amber Benson, will be released by Disney Press on March 7.
