CBS has released a brand new Star Trek Discovery season 2 featurette exploring Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike. Star Trek is one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time and, for the better part of the last decade, it's been the movies that have dominated the spotlight. But Star Trek Discovery finally brought the franchise back to its roots on the small screen, exploring Starfleet in the early years before the original series. This season, we're going to come to know Pike much better, as explained in this new video.

The featurette goes over the history of the character of Christopher Pike who, as Trekkies know, was the captain of the Enterprise prior to Kirk. The pilot for the original Star Trek series actually featured Pike and not Kirk. As Anson Mount explains, he's a character with a lot of backstory that has yet to be fully explored, which is part of what Star Trek Discovery is doing.

"Captain Pike is the kind of captain who is aware that his most precious resource is his crew. When we come into season 2, the crew has had a tough time with a captain that they realized they couldn't trust. I think Pike enters knowing that's the wall he's up against and has to disarm them very quickly... He is completely unafraid to admit that he has no idea what the right decision is. He utilizes his crew as much as commands them. I think that's a really good quality in a leader."

Christopher Pike was originally played by Jeffrey Hunter in the unused pilot for Star Trek in 1965. More recently, Bruce Greenwood portrayed the character in the J.J. Abrams movies, 2009's Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness. But Anson Mount is easily going to be the most significant version of Pike, in terms of screen time, that we've had to date. Given the character's long history within the franchise, that comes with a certain amount of pressure.

Star Trek is set to be a huge part of the CBS All Access streaming service in the future. Not only do they have Star Trek Discovery, but they are also working on a new series that will bring back Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard for the first time since 2002's Nemesis, as well as an animated series titled Lower Decks. It gives Trek lovers plenty of reason to shell out for that monthly subscription.

The cast also includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Jason Isaacs and Wilson Cruz. Additionally, Ethan Peck will make his debut as a young Spock this season. Alex Kurtzman takes over as showrunner in season 2, following the departure of Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg last summer. Star Trek Discovery returns on January 17. Be sure to check out the new Pike featurette from the Star Trek YouTube channel below.
