Star Trek Discovery season 2 has found its Spock. Actor Ethan Peck, the grandson of Hollywood icon Gregory Peck, has officially been tapped to play the famous half-human and half-Vulcan who was originally brought to life by the late, great Leonard Nimoy. Peck has some big shoes to fill. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman, who replaced season 1 showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, had this to say about the latest addition to the show's cast.
"Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock's greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock's legacy. In that spirit, we're thrilled to welcome him to the family."
Ethan Peck may not be a big name (though this casting is sure to help boost his profile) but he's been working steadily in the business for some time. He got his start as a child actor in the mid-90s and has since gone on to star in movies like In Time and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. He also starred in the 10 Things I Hate About You TV series, as well as the CBS drama Madam Secretary. His role as Spock in Star Trek Discovery is by far his most high-profile gig to date. The actor took to Twitter to post a photo of himself alongside several members of the Nimoy family, expressing his gratitude for his new role.
"Thanks to the Nimoy family for your open arms, warm welcome, smiling curiosity and support, for making me feel worthy, as I embrace and take into my heart the iconic half alien we know as Mr. Spock. It is an incomparable honor. #StarTrekDiscovery #LLAP"
It was initially reported last year that Spock would be making his way to the CBS All Access series. This was hinted at during the season 1 finale, in which, the Discovery comes into contact with the Enterprise. The Star Trek Discovery season 2 trailer that was released during San Diego Comic-Con further teased the character's impending arrival.
For the time being, it's not clear exactly how prominent of a role Spock will have on the series. In the show, he serves as science officer on the Enterprise under Christopher Pike, who is played by Anson Mount. Star Trek Discovery season 2 is set to premiere in early 2019, but doesn't yet have an exact release date. This news comes to us courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.
