As many fans know, this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Star Trek franchise, which was launched with the original TV series back in 1966. Paramount will help celebrate this milestone with the release of Star Trek Beyond, which takes place during the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year journey. Last night, a special fan event was held at the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles, where the new trailer debuted. It was also revealed during the fan event that this movie will feature 50 different alien species, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

The official Star Trek Twitter page was covering the event live and dropped this tidbit of information, but there were no details revealed about these aliens. It's worth noting that we got a sneak peek at two new aliens last month, when director Justin Lin shared a photo to celebrate First Contact Day. Along with debuting the new trailer last night, the studio also honored late Star Trek iconic Leonard Nimoy with a special tribute, which culminated with the studio naming a street after him on their Hollywood lot. We've compiled a number of photos from the event below, from various Twitter accounts, which include new photos that were displayed during the event and the poster that attendees were given.

The trailer that debuted last night was only our second official glimpse at this highly-anticipated movie, which hits theaters July 22, with the first trailer arriving in December, just before the holiday season. Many fans expressed how disappointed they were in the trailer, along with a few Star Trek icons such as George Takei and Wil Wheaton. During a new profile on Justin Lin for Wired, both the director and star/co-writer Simon Pegg spoke about these negative reactions to the trailer. Here's what Justin Lin had to say about George Takei's dismissal of the trailer below.

"George has always handled things with class. He was a huge part of my life, so for him to swing a sucker punch, that hurt. On Fast, I wasn't a car guy. I guess it hurt more because this is something that is a part of me."

Simon Pegg didn't exactly pull his punches when firing back at the movie's famous critics, including Patton Oswalt. Of course, Simon Pegg not only reprises his role as Scotty in the movie, but he also co-wrote the script alongside Doug Jung, with the actor/writer revealing that he was disappointed about the negative reactions to the trailer. Here's what he had to say below.

"(I was) disappointed that Wil Wheaton, Patton Oswalt, and George Takei were slagging off the trailer, because they know a finished trailer is never a reflection of the finished film. Get a f--king clue! It's really good fun: thrilling and heartfelt."

Star Trek Beyond goes up against Warner Bros.' Lights Out and 20th Century Fox's Ice Age: Collision Course when it hits theaters nationwide on July 22. It remains to be seen if Paramount Plans on releasing another trailer between now and the release date, but we'll be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, take a look at some of the tweets and photos from last night's Star Trek Beyond fan event on the Paramount Pictures lot.
