Eight months after the Sons of Anarchy spin-off entitled Mayans MC received a pilot order from FX, the network has decided to reshoot the pilot while recasting some of the key roles. The network has also brought in Norberto Barba (Grimm) to direct the new re-cast pilot and serve as an executive producer. Kurt Sutter, who co-created the new series with Elgin James, was planning on directing the pilot but now he will focus on the writing while handing directorial duties over to Norberto Barba. Recasting is currently under way, with the pilot expected to be reshot in late summer.

The report from Deadline doesn't reveal which of the actors will be recast, although, it has become more common for these pilot reshoots to occur, especially on high-profile projects. In fact, the original Sons of Anarchy pilot featured Scott Glenn as Clay Morrow, although he was later replaced by Ron Perlman, once the producers decided to make the series more of a dark comedy than a drama. The original pilot also featured Emilio Reyes as one of the members of the Sons of Anarchy, but he was later recast as the Mayans MC president Marcus Alvarez. FX also employed pilot reshoots on their new series Snowfall, which debuts tonight on the cable network.

Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves. The Mayans were recurring and pivotal players in Sons of Anarchy throughout the show's seven-year run. Production started on the Mayans MC pilot back in late April, with series co-creator Kurt Sutter sharing the first images from the set. The network did not announce a series order during its upfront presentation back in May, but the network is certainly still trying to salvage the series, especially given how successful Sons of Anarchy was for FX.

JD Pardo leads the cast as EZ Reyes, with Emilio Rivera returning as Marcus Alvarez. The cast also includes Edward James Olmos as EZ Reyes' father Felipe, who tries to get his son on the straight and narrow, while Clayton Cardenas plays Angel Reyes, EZ's brother and a full patch member of the Mayans MC Santo Padre chapter, John Ortiz as Esai "Taino" Osorio, the president of the Mayans MC Santo Padre Charter and Sarah Bolger as Emily, EZ's childhood sweetheart. Supporting cast members include Alexandra Barreto as Antonia Pena, Andrea Londo as Carnalita, Antonio Jaramillo as Michael "Riz" Ariza, Carla Baratta as Carnalita, Efrat Dor as Katrina, Jacqueline Obradors as Marisol Reyes, Raymond Cruz as Che "Padre" Romero and Richard Cabral as Johnny "El Coco" Cruz. It's anyone's guess at the moment who in this ensemble will be back for the reshot pilot.

If the Mayans MC pilot reshoot is successful, and a series order is given, it's possible that this series may be eyeing a winter or a spring 2018 debut on FX, although that is only speculation at this time. It's also possible that the network may hold the show for a fall 2018 premiere, perhaps even giving the show the same Tuesday 10 PM time slot as its predecessor, Sons of Anarchy. Sons of Anarchy ran for seven successful seasons on FX, which series creator Kurt Sutter followed up with The Bastard Executioner, which only ran for one season in the fall of 2015.
