Last month, it was announced that Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is planning a spinoff. At the time, not much info about the project was released. It is known that the show will revolve around the Mayans Motorcycle Club, which played a key role in the original series. Now, while out promoting his upcoming FX series The Bastard Executioner, the mastermind behind SAMCRO opened up a little bit more about what we can expect to see. And it should make fans very happy.

Mayans, which is only a tentative title, is confirmed to take place in modern day. It is a contemporary story, and won't serve as a prequel. Best of all, it could definitely include some, if not all of, the Sons of Anarchy cast. What's not divulged is whether or not this all happens after Sons of Anarchy Season 7, or during the same time period, much like AMC's Better Call Saul. If that is the case, then anyone might be expected to show up. But don't expect a straight forward crossover. About the spinoff, Kurt Sutter explained the following.

"It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand. I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told. It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that. It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn't do anything to undermine. We're figuring out what that would look like and I'm in the process of meeting with writers and narrowing it down. My intent is, over the hiatus I'll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there."

Many were surprised to hear that Mayans was happening, as Kurt Sutter had previously teased a possible prequel that follows the First 9. That is still happening as well, but won't be a full blown series. Instead, it will be a limited series that follows Jax's father John Teller and a young Piney who meet during Vietnam and return home to establish SamCro. Talking with Deadline, Kurt Sutter had this to say.

"At some point I do have plans to hopefully do the prequel, which I do see as a one-off 10- or 12-episode thing where we begin in Nam and see John Teller and Piney and see how that relationship got created, and bring them back to the States and the obvious external dynamics that were going on with the country and the perception of the war and what an odd kind of perception these vets got when they returned home. And then have it be the development of the club, ending before we start to get too close to some of the mythology that's already been established."

Mayans is still in the very early development process. On Sons of Anarchy, the Mayans were a rival motorcycle gang of SAMCRO's. They consisted of mostly Mexican-American members, and were involved in the heroine distribution business. Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) led the Oakland charter, and the series began with the Mayans being adversaries of SAMCRO. That changes as the series continued on, as SAMCRO built a continuous working relationship with the Mayans both as business partners and when it came to turf wars. It isn't known if Emilio Rivera will return. About how the show first came to fruition, Kurt Sutter said this.

"The Mayan thing happened as I was talking to Eric Schrier, one of the FX executives I've known since The Shield. We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market. I casually said I'd be open to doing something with the Mayans."

Kurt Sutter hasn't been resting since Sons of Anarchy went off the air. His new series The Bastard Executioner is coming to FX next week. Like that new show, Mayans is also going to be a co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. No writer has been attached to the Sons of Anarchy spinoff to help spearhead the project. All of Kurt Sutter's energy is currently being consumed by his latest fantasy drama series, which hopes to give Game of Thrones a run for its money. Kurt Sutter is a creator, writer, producer, director and actor on The Bastard Executioner. And making things more complicated, his Dark Mute character requires three hours in the make-up chair every day. The Dark Mute will appear in at least 6 episodes when it debuts September 15 with a two-hour premiere.

After serving two consecutive 7 season runs on both contemporary crime-based dramas Sons of Anarchy and The Shield, Kurt Sutter has been eager to dive into a different genre, which The Bastard Executioner provides with its 14th century setting. But Mayans will allow the modern day renaissance man to keep his most popular franchise alive. Sons of Anarchy was notorious for growing bigger and bigger with each consecutive season, and that hasn't slowed down, as more and more fans discover it on Netflix and other streaming services. Sons of Anarchy concluded its run as the most watched series in FX history. There's little wonder as to why FX and Kurt Sutter would be interested in bringing it back. And Mexican-Americans are hungrier than ever for entertainment that encompasses their cultural, giving Mayans the potential to be even bigger than its predecessor.
