Gossip Girl executive producer Joshua Safran is heading to NBC to replace Theresa Rebeck as showrunner on the Broadway drama Smash.

The show follows a cross-section of characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway. Theresa Rebeck wrote the first three episodes of the musical series, but stepped down as showrunner last month. She will still be involved as a writer and executive producer in Season 2, which was announced last month. The show's lead character, Julia (Debra Messing), is also based on her.

Joshua Safran has served as executive producer on Gossip Girl since 2008, and is currently the showrunner. It still isn't known yet if Gossip Girl will be picked up for a sixth season on The CW.
