William H. Macy and the cast of Shameless are thanking fans for the ride after the series finale aired on Showtime this weekend. Since early 2011, Macy has been part of an ensemble cast of the acclaimed drama series, playing the fan favorite role of Frank Gallagher. In a heartfelt tribute letter posted to his fans the next day, Macy thanks the Shameless audience for sticking with the series for so long.

"Dear Audience, I love you," Macy's statement reads in part. The actor then explains how "proud and humble" he feels that the fan base has only grown bigger with every year. Whether it's the fans who've been tuned in since the beginning, or those who joined them along with way through binge-watching during the pandemic, William H. Macy says he has always felt "so very, very pleased" with how kind and generous the fans have been over the past decade.

At the end of his letter to the fans, Macy adds: "And now it's done. The last episode has aired. And I'd like to tell you again, I love you. Thank you for letting us in to your lives. And if I may make one small request, please stay completely, bravely and unapologetically, shameless."

Other actors from the series are also saying goodbye to Shameless and the fans on social media. Taking to Twitter, Kev actor Steve Howey praised former lead star Emmy Rossum, who was, unfortunately, able to make it back to the series for its final episode.

"She was our matriarch," Howey wrote, posting an image of Rossum. "One of the pillars that held up the foundation. If you look back over the last 10 seasons, you'll find something special, Fiona. She was missed this last season but never forgotten."

Prior to the premiere, Rossum also said in a tweet, "I'm so proud of this cast and am immensely honored to have been a part of a show as unique and impactful as Shameless. I will miss you this Sunday!"

Noel Fisher, who plays Mickey on the series, also wrote a tweet that reads: "Thank you all for going on this amazing ride with us! You really are the very best! #Shameless."

"11 years later. I have the freaking chills. Our show ends tonight, for good. Tune in for a really special episode," Debbie actress Emma Kenney wrote on Twitter before the episode. In another tweet, Kenney tells Macy, "Bill, you are just the coolest. Through and through. Going to miss the privilege of playing your daughter."

And Shanola Hampton, who played V on the series, wrote a tweet that reads: "We thank you for spending your time with us! Blessings always! #ForeverShameless #ForeverFamily."

Inspired by the British series of the same name, Shameless was created by John Wells. Following a family living in the South Side of Chicago, the show starred William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Ethan Cutkosky, Emma Kenney, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Noel Fisher, Steve Howey, Shanola Hampton, and Joan Cusack. The show ultimately ran for a total of 134 episodes across eleven seasons. You can check out Macy's letter to the fans on Twitter.
