As if 2020 wasn't filled with enough tragedy, word has come in that Netflix is putting an end to the acclaimed series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Streaming on the service since 2018, the new take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch has proven to be popular with viewers and critics alike. After airing the prior three seasons over the past two years, Netflix announced on Wednesday that the show would end its run on the streamer with the release of "part four," with the final episodes due to arrive later this year.

"Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from day one. The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone's favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show," showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement. "I'm also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can't wait for everyone to see part four."

It's not clear why Netflix chose to end the series, but it's certainly pretty bad news for the showrunner. News of Sabrina getting the axe comes just days after Aguirre-Sacasa's Lucy Hale-led Riverdale spinoff series Katy Keene was also cancelled on The CW after just one season. Aguirre-Sacasa would also recently have his pilot episode for the planned series The Brides passed over by ABC. Still, Aguirre-Sacasa will have plenty to keep him busy as the showrunner of Riverdale. While the spinoffs haven't been quite so lucky, Riverdale is still going strong on The CW, as the network has already renewed the show for a fifth season to premiere in 2021.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was originally intended to air on The CW as a companion series to Riverdale before moving to Netflix ahead of its first season premiere. Inspired by the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman, the series stars Kiernan Shipka as the titular teenager, also starring Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, and Michelle Gomez. Set in the town of Greendale, the series the coming-of-age story follows teenager Sabrina Spellman as she "must reconcile her dual nature as a half-Witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit."

Netflix has similarly announced cancelations for several other popular shows on the streaming service as well. The upcoming seasons for the popular series Ozark, The Kominsky Method, and Dead to Me will all serve as the final seasons for their respective programs. Given the company's history of axing other fan favorite shows too soon as well, a four-season run can still be seen as a success for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. There's no word yet on a possible release date for part four, but the final episodes will debut sometime in 2020. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
