Showtime has given a pilot order for The Vatican, with filmmaker Ridley Scott locked in to direct the first episode. This will mark the director's first time at the helm of a TV pilot. Here is a brief rundown of the show.

"A provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics - set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. The series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world's most hidden institutions."

Paul Attanasio wrote the pilot script. Although he is best known for writing movies such as The Sum Of All Fears and Donnie Brasco, Paul Attanasio also served as an executive producer on the Fox series House.

Ridley Scott currently serves as an executive producer on the CBS drama The Good Wife. He also executive produced the mini-series Coma for A&E earlier this year.
