Wubba lubba dub dub, Rick and Morty fans! The moment you've been waiting for has finally arrived. Following the insane demand for the Mulan Szechuan chicken nugget sauce, which the world was reminded of during the Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere, McDonald's has finally caved and is bringing back the sauce. But there's a catch. The coveted Szechuan sauce is going to be made available for a very limited time in very limited quantities.
McDonald's recently made the announcement that the Szechuan sauce, which was originally introduced as a promotional sauce in the 90s for Disney's Mulan, is coming back to help promote their new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders. McDonald's didn't specifically say how limited the quantities will be, but they do emphasize that they will be "really, really" limited. Here's what the fast-food chain had to say about the must-attend event for Rick and Morty fans (and fans of allegedly delicious things.)
"But, let's really talk tender...we know they're even better with sauce. We're introducing an all-new Signature Sauce to perfectly pair with them. Ready to celebrate? We're giving away 1,000 limited-edition, hand numbered, screen-printed posters for all 10 sauces in our legendary lineup, including Szechuan Sauce. That's right, collectible art, worthy of the pop-culture status fans have given their favorite sauces. In addition, after nearly 20 years (and perhaps a bit of time travel) we're even doing the impossible...On Oct 7, together with the collectible sauce-themed posters, we're also giving away a one-time only, limited-edition, run of Szechuan Sauce in select restaurants. And when we say limited, we mean really, really limited! Click below to find out which restaurants will be giving away* the posters, and the select few of those that will also have the Szechuan Sauce on Oct 7. So mark your calendars. It's time to show your flavor. Your passion. Show...you're Obsauced."
In case you need a reminder, Rick Sanchez re-introduced the Szechuan sauce to pop culture in the Rick and Morty season 3 premiere. While they were rummaging around in the depths of his mind, he felt the need to stop and get some chicken nuggets, mostly so he could have some of the sauce. Ever since, people have been obsessed with it, with some of the Szechuan sauce selling on eBay for insane amounts. One can only imagine the same thing will happen when these lucky few get their hands on the new, limited supplies next week.
It's worth noting that McDonald's didn't actually mention Rick and Morty in their announcement, but it's no coincidence. Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland willed this into existence with their excellent gag. If you're hoping to get your hands on some of the Szechuan sauce, you can check to see if your local McDonald's is participating. You can also see the poster that McDonald's created for the re-release of the Szechuan sauce, which is pretty neat. Even if it doesn't have any Rick and Morty references on it.
