Fox has ordered a thrilling new event series based on its hit series, Prison Break, it was announced today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. An immediate critical and ratings hit when the original series premiered in the fall of 2005, the new event series will hit the ground running, reuniting series stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows. While Michael seemingly died in the 2009 TV movie Prison Break: The Final Break, Gary Newman told Entertainment Weekly that may not have been the case, hinting that Michael may not even have the brain tumor that plagued him during the series.

"We all who watched the show and loved it thought that Michael had died. (Series creator) Paul Scheuring came in with a great twist that explains that he didn't die, and what he's been doing in the interim. The script that I read, it (the brain tumor) wasn't addressed, so I don't know whether that's been somehow taken care of or not."

The original producing team, including Prison Break series creator Paul Scheuring, Neal H. Moritz, Marty Adelstein and Dawn Olmstead will return to executive-produce the new series, with Paul Scheuring serving as showrunner/writer. The original action drama Prison Break centered on a young man (Wentworth Miller) determined to prove his convicted brother's (Dominic Purcell) innocence and save him from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to escape from prison. A breakout success in its premiere season, garnering Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama (Miller), as well as winning the People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama, Prison Break thrilled audiences for four heart-pounding seasons, ending its run in May 2009. Here's what Dana Walden had to say about this new story.

"The story unravels on an international landscape, it's not a domestic show. I'm hoping we'll see many of the great characters from that season return throughout the season. It has all the twists and turns you've come to expect from that show. We open on a very international contemporary feeling story."

Both Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will next be seen in the upcoming superhero series DC's Legends of Tomorrow, where they play Captain Cold and Heat Wave, respectively. The new Prison Break series will start production this April, with Gary Newman adding that the event series will span between eight and 10 episodes. The event series will air sometime during the 2016-2017 TV series, but it isn't known if it will debut in the fall or midseason. What do you think about Prison Break coming back to the small screen?
