Back in June, Cartoon Network announced that they are moving forward with a new version of the hit animated series The Powerpuff Girls, which will debut in 2016. We haven't heard anything else about the series since then, but the network revealed today that Adventure Time's Nick Jennings has signed on to executive produce, confirming that it will arrive next year. Here's an excerpt from today's Cartoon Network press release regarding The Powerpuff Girls triumphant return.

"Slated for a 2016 launch, The Powerpuff Girls reboot will include an all-new television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full licensing program slated to roll out across all regions. One of the network's most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls, which debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy® Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes -- Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup -- whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. Emmy® and BAFTA award winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) is on board as executive producer."

No voice cast members have been announced for the new Powerpuff Girls animated series at this time. The original show ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2004, which also spawned the theatrical feature The Powerpuff Girls Movie in 2002, along with The Powerpuff Girls: 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas and The Powerpuff Girls A Made Up Story. The Powerpuff Girls is one of the top-grossing Cartoon Network brands of all time, with more than $2.5 billion in retail sales generated since its debut, and has endured as a global fashion brand with a range of apparel partners and fashion collections around the world. Nick Jennings has also served as a writer and producer on SpongeBob SquarePants and Rocko's Modern Life.
