It's morphin' time once again for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers star Austin St. John, as the original Red Ranger is back as Jason Scott in a sneak peek preview of Power Rangers Beast Morphers season 2. Though the name of the series has changed, the show remains set in the same universe, and the franchise is kicking off its 27th overall season this weekend on Nickelodeon. A newly-released sneak peek video also reveals the return of Jason Scott to help the new Rangers as part of the "ultimate team-up." The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team consisted of Austin St. John as Jason the Red Ranger, Thuy Trang as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Walter Emanuel Jones as Zack the Black Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, David Yost as Billy the Blue Ranger, and Jason David Frank as Tommy the Green (and later White) Ranger. Seeing some kind of reunion with several original Rangers is certainly possible, as Frank has reprised his role many times at various points in Power Rangers and is even working on his own Power Rangers-inspired movie along with several franchise stars. However, a complete reunion of the original team is sadly impossible as Trang passed away in a car accident in 2001.
The Power Rangers series is soon getting the reboot treatment again on the big screen as well. Originally, the franchise first made its way to the big screen with 1995's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, followed by the 1997 sequel Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. More recently, the movie series was relaunched with a Power Rangers reboot in 2017, though the project fell short of expectations at the box office. It has since been reported that a new take on the story is in development, which will be closer in tone to the original series as it's said to be set in the 1990's.
Though St. John's involvement in the Power Rangers franchise has been limited since he departed the original incarnation of the series, this appearance on Beast Morphers won't be the first time he's appeared on the show since then. In 2002, the former Red Ranger made a special guest appearance in an episode of the series, which was known as Power Rangers Wild Force at the time. Jason Scott hasn't made a peep in the franchise ever since, meaning St. John's comeback on Beast Morphers will mark his return to the franchise in nearly two decades.
Power Rangers Beast Morphers just debuted its second season on Nickelodeon, with new episodes following Saturday nights on the network. After the current season, the series will be back with more new episodes in 2021. With the original series still ongoing, albeit with an updated incarnation, and with another movie on the way reminiscent of the original series, it's got to be an awesome time to be an old-school Power Rangers fan.
