Netflix is bringing some Pokemon goodness to fans in the U.S. The streaming service has announced a new deal with The Pokemon Company for the rights to stream Pokémon Journeys: The Series starting this summer. This serves as the 23rd season overall for the long-running animated series, with the first 12 episodes coming to Netflix in June.

A trailer for the show has been released, which sees Ash and Pikachu side-by-side making their way through the Pokemon-filled world. New characters and new Pokemon are introduced along the way. Even though we are more than two decades into the show's run, it looks remarkably similar to what long time fans may remember, just a bit more polished. It also showcases a glimpse of the new theme song, which is performed by the band Walk Off the Earth. Emily Arons, senior vice president of international business at The Pokemon Company International, had this to say in a statement.

"With their tremendous reach and ability for fans to enjoy content anytime and anywhere, Netflix is the ideal partner to premiere new episodes of the beloved animated Pokémon series in the U.S. We can't wait for Pokemon fans of all ages to continue discovering the spirit of adventure and friendship in Pokemon Journeys: The Series, our newest season coming to Netflix this June."

This is just the latest collaboration between Netflix and the Pokemon franchise. Earlier this year the latest animated movie in the franchise, Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back-Evolution, which was a remake of the original animated movie, also made its U.S. debut courtesy of the streaming service. Several seasons of the animated series, which originally debuted in 1997, are also available for subscribers currently.

In Pokemon Journeys: The Series, Ash Ketchum has a new plan to see the world. But first, he and his partner Pikachu make their way to the Cerise Laboratory, a research facility dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of Pokemon throughout the various regions. Ash meets Goh, another boy who is abundantly curious about Pokemon, and both are thrilled when Professor Cerise asks them to become official research fellows. Ash is as determined as ever to become a Pokemon Master, with Goh hoping to catch one of every Pokemon, even the Mythical Mew. The two are in for adventure and excitement as they explore the wide world of Pokemon.

Pokemon was launched in Japan in 1996 and has since blossomed into one of the most successful entertainment brands in pop culture, spanning playing cards, video games, animation and more. A live-action movie, Detective Pikachu was released in 2019 and grossed an impressive $433 million at the global box office. Warner Bros. is expected to make a sequel at some point, but details have yet to be revealed. Pokemon Journeys: The Series arrives on June 12 via the Netflix streaming service. Be sure to check out the trailer for yourself.
